The best accommodation in St Moritz

Since there are a few separate base areas to choose from when visiting St Moritz, it is essential to check the exact location of a hotel before booking a holiday here. St Moritz Dorf is home to most of the five- and four-star hotels, while Suvretta has the palatial Suvretta House hotel and a couple of more modest places. St Moritz Bad is a quieter and less showy place to stay. 

There is also the option of a five-star and a four-star rooms in the separate village of Celerina 3km from Dorf, plus several apartments. Each village, including Celerina, has access into the main area of slopes at Corviglia.

Getting to Hotel Waldhaus-am-See, which is on the outskirts of Dorf, entailing a breath-taking walk up from the lake. However, breath is soon recovered relaxing in the presence of one of the largest whisky collections in the world – there are more than 1,000 blends and malts. The Waldhaus is also famed for its fine cuisine.

In the centre of Dorf a short walk from the Corviglia funicular, not only is the sun terrace at three-star Hotel Hauser a popular resort rendezvous, Café Hauser is famous for its bread, cakes and chocolates.

An art-inspired, four-star hotel in the centre of Dorf, Art Boutique Hotel Monopol is a four-minute walk from the Corviglia funicular and has a rooftop bar and terrace. For convenient location and value for money, it’s hard to beat.

A five-minute walk from the Corviglia funicular, four-star Hotel Steffani in Dorf includes some modern rooms and some furnished in typical Engadine style, and has a spa area with indoor pool and sauna.

A St Moritz institution, Suvretta House is a five-star hotel that’s in neither Dorf nor Bad, but set majestically in its own grounds at the foot of the Corviglia ski area in the Suvretta hamlet. It has its own private lift and ski school, as well as two mountain restaurants elsewhere in the ski area.

Established in 1896, Badrutt’s Palace, easily recognisable by its green-topped landmark tower, sits in six acres of private grounds beside Lake St Moritz. It has eight restaurants and is also home to the King’s Social House, the resort’s smartest nightspot.
