32 species of shark
Rising ocean temperatures are likely to bring 10 new species of shark to British waters by 2050, according to a 2019 study by Nat Geo Wild to celebrate Sharkfest. New arrivals could include the great hammerhead, bigeye thresher and oceanic whitetip shark, which has a reputation for feeding on shipwreck survivors.
The marine conservation charity, Shark Trust, says 32 species of shark are currently found in British waters, with 21 living here all year round, including the Angelshark, the Portuguese Dogfish, the Black Dogfish, the Kitefin Shark and the Gulper Shark. Seasonal visitors include the giant Basking Shark, the world’s second largest fish, the Blue Shark and the Shortfin Mako (pictured), the fastest shark recorded, reaching speeds of up to 30mph. Smooth Hammerheads and Frilled Sharks make occasional visits, and, while there have been no confirmed sightings, conditions do suit White Sharks.
