Considered an eyesore by Parisians when first built for the Exposition Universelle of 1889, Gustave Eiffel’s iron tower is now the ultimate emblem for the French capital. With its elegant latticework and twinkling lights, it still has the power to take the breath of even the most cynical of visitors.

If you opt to stay in one of the 7th arrondissement’s hotels closest to the Eiffel Tower, you will find elegant architecture, grand monuments and artistic addresses, but in such an iconic area, it can also be tricky to find a hotel that packs authentic charm as well as great location. Set in the one-time mansion of Prince Roland Bonaparte, great nephew of Napoleon, the Shangri-La is a Parisian pied à terre on a palatial scale. Arguably one of the most enviably located hotels near the Eiffel Tower with a balcony, its glittering illuminations are visible from 60 percent of the rooms. The Palais de Tokyo and Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris are less than five minutes’ walk down the road, while it’s 20 minutes to the Champs-Élysées and plenty of fine dining. For all its polished marble and twinkling chandeliers, the atmosphere is surprisingly low-key, and service is near faultless. It is a 15-minute walk to the Eiffel Tower.

Behind the striking wrap-around façade of a converted 1930s telephone exchange, this calmly luxurious hotel near Les Invalides is an easy walk to the Eiffel Tower (17-minutes), and a daring addition to an upmarket part of the 7th arrondissement that is surprisingly short of luxury hotels. Designed by Jean-Philippe Nuel, interiors bedecked in natural woods with clever lighting and original paintings and photos are quietly luxurious, though it’s perhaps a little too self-consciously stylish. Many of the rooms are seductive duplexes. Four suites have huge terraces, with views of Les Invalides and/or the Eiffel Tower.

Set on a wide avenue, the hotel is a hop and a skip from the classical 18th-century École Militaire military training school – and nearby metro station and brasseries – at the southern end of the Parc du Champ de Mars. Languishing dramatically at Mademoiselle Eiffel’s steel-webbed feet, this is one of the sleekest and largest hotels with a view of the Eiffel Tower from many of its rooms. The four-star hotel is big for Paris – and feels it. It was originally designed by Pierre Dufau and Raymond Loewy as a Hilton in 1965, and received a smart makeover when the Accor’s Pullman chain took over. Expect light-filled spaces, contemporary furnishings, exemplary business facilities, and a stylish Franco-American brasserie serving produce fresh from its ‘potager’ (veg patch). The Eiffel Tower is a three or four minute walk away.

This is a relaxed boutique address with sensational Eiffel Tower views from every room in the 19th-century house. Décor evokes the literary salons of 18th-century Paris and the hotel café and salon de thé serves all-day coffee, cakes and light meals. It’s in an 1870 townhouse on a reasonably busy road in the posh 7e arrondissement, a 10-minute walk from the wonderful Musée Rodin where Auguste Rodin’s pensive figure The Thinker (1902) holds sentry in the art museum’s romantic sculpture-peppered gardens. The École Militaire metro station (line 8) is next door.
